Spenser had realized that Richie was taking him in circles after he’d made a left and spotted a bullet-riddled road sign that he had remembered seeing before. The man was stalling for some reason. Richie’s phone had rung several times, but no one ever left a message.

After pulling the van over, Spenser plucked the hammer from off the top of the dashboard and turned to look at Richie. He had moved him up into the front passenger seat and strapped him to it with duct tape.

“I thought we were past this.” The hammer swung twice in a short arc due to the close confines of the passenger compartment. The blows lacked the force that the earlier ones had. It didn’t matter. Spenser had targeted the knee he’d previously injured. Any contact would have elicited agony.

Without the ball gag in his mouth, Richie was able to release a full scream. Tears ran from his eyes and he took fast, short breaths.

“You’re going to stop playing around and give me the right directions or I’m going to dump you in the middle of nowhere with two broken knees. After the sun comes up, you might last nearly a day before you die. They won’t be pleasant hours.”

Richie gasped, swallowed, then jerked his head to the left. “Leave the road and drive into the desert to head due west. We’re about eight miles from the mine.”

Spenser glared at him. The man had been planning to bring his family out here to be killed. Once his usefulness ended, it would be a pleasure to kill the bastard. Spenser donned a set of night vision goggles that were a match for the ones Tanner was wearing and left the road to drive across the desert with his headlights off.
